While in Brazil, 3 Owners of Good Life University had the pleasure of visiting the Casa Geraçao in the Vidigal Favela of Rio De Janiero. Case Geracao is a nonprofit, design and fashion school, free to the youth of Rio. They operate two schools, one in the Vidigal and another in Cidade de Dues, the “City of God”.
Entering a favela in Brazil is a unique experience. Portrayals by film and the media often betray the rich culture and societal structures that exist within. If you can look beyond the preconceptions about life in these famous areas of Rio – past the informal militias that police the street, you could have an opportunity like we did to meet some of the happiest and exciting young people from Rio.
We were greeted by a very caring staff that showed us around and introduced us to the students of Casa Geraçao. We walked and met students and teachers, and introduced ourselves and our own clothing line – and an impromptu runway and photoshoot took place. The students took our shirts, styled the looks and walked the runway outside of the school. We were lucky enough to have experienced this as a U.S.-based documentary team also in Rio, caught it all on film.
The experience was truly one of a kind. We were in Rio for a vacation – but gravity, fate, whatever you would call it – pulled us toward this experience. We, like many thousands of others, were in Rio to live the fun in the sun and party the night away. But Rio had different plans for us this time around. We got to see the real Rio, the real City of God; the students and staff in an organization who are fostering and supporting the creativity of the next generation of Cariocas and the world’s fashion entrepreneurs.
The school is not-for-profit and donations are very much appreciated. Check out the site www.casageracao.com.br
